SUP Race Events
After speaking to a couple of other stand up paddle board lesson providers in the North East of England, Boardskillz decided to host the first ever SUP Race Event at Durham Amateur Rowing Club in February 2015. The event was sponsored by Newcastle-based stand up paddle board, surfboard and kite board brand Loco who not only helped organise the Race but also provided a fantastic prize fund.
Forming part of the Northern Winter SUP League, Race 2, despite sideways sleet and rain, attracted 22 paddlers who had ventured from as far as Scotland and West Wittering! The race was split into specific categories including 14′ and 12’6” for the more serious amongst the participants as well as a fun class for those just wanting to race their own board. We witnessed some fierce competition on the day with a professional team rider from Starboard taking the overall win with first time racer Neil Jules Craig from Berwick coming a very respectable second on a 12’6” Loco Pro Race Board he was demoing that weekend.
The intention for the 2015 season is that we’ll stage other race events both on flat water and in and out of the surf. If you’re looking for a new competitive sport maybe this could be for you? We’ll be running specific race training and fitness sessions for stand up paddle boarding starting from Easter 2015 so if you’d like to see what it’s all about please get in touch to find out more.
