Boardskillz Gets Newcastle Capoeira Club Paddle Boarding at Druridge Bay

After meeting Anna Etchells from the Blue Reef Aquarium at a chance networking event Joe invited her and her boyfriend to come and try paddle boarding at Tynemouth beach one weekend. They were both that suitably taken with it that Anna asked Joe to attend her Newcastle Capoeira group’s camping weekend at Druridge Bay Country Park and bring some paddle boards with a view to providing taster sessions for her Brazilian martial arts buddies.

Greeted with fantastic weather and a favourable sea state it was soon clear that these martial artists would soon be up and riding in no time.

After some land-based demos everyone was itching to get on the water and test their ability. We launched everyone safely and instructed them to paddle prone beyond the wave line so that they could make their first attempts without worrying about being side-swiped by the incoming waves. In no time at all everyone was stood up and were soon perfecting their stroke, trying basic turns and even thinking about catching their first SUP waves.

Time seemed to pass really quickly so it wasn’t long before the sun started to set and it was time to set up camp and get the BBQ on and some cold beers cracked open. They were certainly a welcoming bunch and let us try their slack line as well as some beginner capoeira moves so we’d like to thank them for their hospitality and look forward to being invited back next season.
